The Novaculite stones are divided into four grades.  Black Hard Arkansas, Hard Arkansas, Soft Arkansas & Washita.  Each grade has a different degree of abrasive quality and sharpening ability.

Soft Arkansas is the best general purpose stone of the grades and will quickly produce a very sharp edge on your knives.
